Orlando L. Blanco has been an attorney and litigator for 40 years, having been admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1982 and the Florida Bar in 1984. He has tried cases involving a wide array of liability issues including: Civil Rights Liability, Governmental Liability Claims, Products Liability, Premises Liability, Automobile Negligence (both First and Third-Party), Professional and Medical Malpractice, Hospice Liability, Rental Car Liability, Paramedic and EMT Liability, Semi- Tractor/Trailer Liability, Insurance Claims Disputes, Property Losses, and Wrongful Death cases. Prior to opening his own private practice, Mr. Blanco served as a Senior Litigation Attorney with CIGNA Insurance Company’s Field Litigation Office in Detroit, Michigan, where he defended a number of insurance defense claims.
In January of 1996, Mr. Blanco opened his own firm specializing in the representation of both public and private transportation groups, including emergency medical services providers, fire departments, busing companies, and other transportation groups. Mr. Blanco is regarded as a national authority in the area of transportation risk management, particularly in the EMS field, having published and presented numerous works in this area and having successfully defended EMS providers in dozens of states in America. Mr. Blanco has received an AV Preeminent Peer Review Rating from Martindale-Hubbell. Mr. Blanco and his firm are approved panel counsel for a number of commercial and specialty insurance companies.
Mr. Blanco has developed specific expertise in the area of Emergency Medical Services and has consulted and represented both public and private EMS providers and related organizations for over 38 years. Some highlights of Mr. Blanco’s contributions in the EMS field include the following:
- Member and consultant for the American Ambulance Association (Insurance Committee)
- Legal representative and consultant to the Michigan Association of Ambulance Services (MAAS). Consulted on various legal and risk management issues and has presented various lectures to MAAS membership.
- Legal counsel for Mobile Health Resources (MHR), a network of Michigan ambulance companies providing medical transportation and billing services on a statewide basis.
- Legal representative and consultant for the Society of Michigan EMS Instructor Coordinators (SMEMSIC). Mr. Blanco has also been the Keynote Speaker at several SMEMSIC annual conferences and has lectured on various EMS-Legal topics.
- Legal representative and consultant for the National Society of Trauma Nurses.
- American Medical Response (AMR) Regional Counsel for Eastern Region, providing oversight and supervision of liability claims in a number of different States in the Eastern region of the U.S. (2001-2007).
- Michigan EMS Expo legal lecturer and presenter (1996-2022).
- Michigan Rural EMS legal lecturer and presenter (2004-2016).
- Published and produced various articles, publications, and video presentations, including: “State by State Analysis of EMS Liability Issues and Laws” (AAA Publications 2004); “Documentation Pitfalls- A Teaching Tool for EMS Providers” DVD (2005); “Patient Care Refusals” DVD (2008).
- Guest lecturer and presenter on legal issues at various EMS forums, including AAA Annual Conference, Michigan EMS EXPO, MAAS, SMEMSIC and individual ambulance providers and insurers.
- Representation of EMS providers in civil litigation and legal matters in various states.
- Legal representative and consultant to several Michigan Medical Control Authorities.
- Legal representative to several Michigan-based Hospice Groups.
Mr. Blanco earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan (1979), and his JD from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan (1982). He also attended the University of Chicago MBA program, but did not receive a degree.
Mr. Blanco is a member of the Michigan Bar (1982) and Florida Bar (1984) and is admitted to practice in several Federal District Courts, including the Eastern and Western District Courts of Michigan, Northern District of Illinois, Southern District of Texas, Southern District of Florida, the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals and the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Blanco is also a member of the Oakland County Bar Association, the Macomb County Bar Association, and the Association of Defense Trial Counsel (Detroit Chapter).
In March of 2014, Mr. Blanco was recognized as one of Michigan's Leaders in the Law 2014, a program dedicated to recognizing and saluting lawyers in Michigan who have distinguished themselves in the practice of law and are setting an example for other lawyers.
In June of 2020, Mr. Blanco was selected as one of America’s Top 100 Civil Defense Litigators of 2020, honoring the most esteemed civil defense litigators throughout the country for their experience, significant case results, peer reputation and community impact.
